April Stone Of The Month – Carnelian

The carnelian (aka cornelian) comes in a variety of colors and belongs to the chalcedony family. The most powerful colors are red and deep orange. These gemstones are commonly sourced from India, Britain, Iceland and Peru. In ancient Egyptian times, the carnelian was placed in tombs as “magic armor” to protect the dead in the afterlife. The noble class were buried with this gemstone to show their stance in society.

The name carnelian is derived from the Latin word meaning “flesh” which is appropriate for the healing powers of this stone. It promotes balanced digestion, encourages the absorption of vitamins, nutrients and minerals in the small intestine and stimulates the metabolism. If a pregnant women is experiencing abdominal pain, she should place a carnelian on the pubic bone everyday for 20 minutes to reduce the pain. Additional powers include:

Coco Chanel was never seen without a long string of pearls. Pearls symbolize what is best within us- you can walk with dignity if you wear this delicate piece! Pearls can stimulate your femininity, lift your spirits and can make you feel calm and beautiful. Who doesn’t want to feel this way?!

Different colors carry different meanings:

  • White- symbol of pure heart and mind; innocence, faith

The pearl is the oldest known gemstone. Freshwater pearls come from lakes, rivers, ponds and other fresh bodies of water where the weather is hotter or colder (ie. Scotland or China). Saltwater pearls are sometimes cultivated in protected lagoons or volcanic atolls.

For centuries, the pearl was known as the most valuable gemstone. Early cultures believed the pearl was born when a single drop of rain fell from the heavens to become the heart of the oyster. Astrologists sometimes link the gemstone to the moon.

The Jasper is considered a relaxation stone and encourages contentment, compassion, tranquility and healing. It is considered a variety of the chalcedony (microcrystalline variety of the quartz). We frequently utilize the Jasper stone in our designs because of it’s variety of colors. Variations include: Yellow, Red, Picture, Picasso, Ocean, Leopard, Mookaite, Kambaba, Green, Fancy, Dalmatian, Breccrated and Black.  According to the Bible this stone is considered a direct gift from God and would be the first foundation stone of New Jerusalem. Eqyptians used this stone to increase sexual energy. In Native American and some Asian cultures, the Jasper is regarded as a rain and healing stone and if often worn to promote mental progress. Oh the Citrine! We use this stone quite frequently because of it’s hue. The Citrine is a yellow gold member of the quartz mineral group and meshes well with warm and cool colors. It is a suitable substitute for the November birthstone Topaz because the deep golden variety found in Madeira Spain holds a striking resemblance.
